Balade à Cracovie / A Stroll in Krakow

Notre dernier repas en Pologne / Our last meal in Poland

Krakow is a very romantic city in the winter. The solitude of the city, cuddling to keep warm, and watching the snow gently fall outside while sipping a pint of polish beer all conspired to make this a surprisingly romantic vacation. Winter in Krakow is intimate and heavy: candles light every window and Christmas lights glisten in the streets. There are little street stalls at every corner, offering bagels, pretzels and steaming hot goat cheese with cranberry and raspberry sauce to pedestrians. Delicious!

Krakow is not only the scientific, cultural and artistic centre of the country, but also a city wrapped in legend, where time flows differently, and where every moment becomes a moment of history. For centuries Krakow was the capital of Poland, the seat of kings, drawing great scholars and artists from the whole world.

We arrived at John Paul II airport at 10 pm on Friday. As soon as we landed, I started to notice the differences between Eastern and Western Europe, mainly the prices: whereas I had just spent 20$ Canadian to get from downtown London to Stanstead airport, the journey in train from the John Paul II airport to Krakow did not even cost 1$! We walked from the train station to our youth hostel, and were greeted by the owners with a shot of Mad Dog, which is a cocktail of strawberry syrup, vodka, and Tabasco sauce. It burns the inside! We then braved the cold outside to go to a club with an unpronounceable name, and danced the night away.

After four hours of sleep, we left Krakow and headed to the city of Oswieciem to visit the German concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau. The fortified walls, barbed wire, platforms, barracks, gallows, gas chambers and cremation ovens show the conditions within which the Nazi genocide took place in the former concentration and extermination camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest in the Third Reich. More than 1.5 million people, among them 90% of Jews, were systematically starved, tortured and murdered in this camp, the symbol of humanity's cruelty to its fellow human beings in the 20th century. We visited this hell on earth on the 62nd anniversary of the camp’s liberation. During our journey by bus, we watched a monstrous movie filmed during the liberation, featuring starving children and adults who were too weak to put a foot in front of the other. During the visit, a single number stayed in my head: 200,000 children below the age of 14 were deported to the camp between 1942 and 1945, and yet only 651 survived. We heard so many horrific stories… in all cases, the prisoners were stripped naked, shaved, tattooed, and separated from their loved ones and their belongings, which were stored in warehouses called ‘Canada.’ These personal objects were then shipped to Germany and sold for profit. The prisoners then walked towards the gas chambers, or towards the barracks to be destined to a slow death through forced labour. Twin children automatically became guinea-pigs for horrendous medical experiments, and Anne Frank died three days before the camp’s liberation.

In spite of the horror, a few stories of hope emerge, like the story of the priest who offered his life to save a father of three children. In July 1941, a man disappeared from block 14, where Father Kolbe was staying. The Nazis immediately selected ten men of the same barrack and condemned them to die of hunger in order to discourage other evasion attempts. The man who disappeared was later found, drowned, in the camp’s toilets. Kolbe volunteered to take François Gajowniczek’s place. The Nazis agreed to the substitution; the ten prisoners were locked up in an underground bunker in the barrack. Father Kolbe survived to two weeks of famine, and was gunned down at the Black Wall. François Gajowniczek survived the internment and passed away only a few years ago. Even in hell on earth, men still had enough humanity to help their peers.

I appreciated visiting the concentration camp, but I never want to return. I am glad that I visited on a wintry chilly day: as I walked through the snow, with my winter coat, my running shoes and my three pairs of socks, with my toes and the tip of my fingers frozen, I thought of the prisoners who neither had a coat nor shoes, and who died of frost bites to their feet…

After more than four hours in the camp, we returned to Krakow. I left our group to explore the old city on my own. We then met up to eat delicious perogies. During the evening, we visited many bars and clubs. We started the evening at the youth hostel with a shot of absinth. Our second stop was a Buddhist bar.
The warmly lit crimson interior was illuminated by hundreds of flickering candles, while we chatted under the conceited gaze of gold Buddhas. We sat in the mezzanine level and observed the wall paintings: randy Indian figures entwined in Kama Sutra embraces. After a few drinks, we sampled
Krakow’s nightlife by visiting gothic, hard metal and techno clubs located in caves.

The next morning, we visited the city: the royal Wawel castle, representing the style of the Renaissance, the Basilica in gothic style, the Cloth Halls, where many historic shops are located, and Kazimierz, the Jewish neighborhood where Schindler’s factory is located. We went inside the Basilica during Sunday mass, and the inside of the church was lit with candles and lampions. The Basilica is made up of two towers of uneven height, and at the top of the highest tour at every hour a trumpeter plays a traditional air.
The story says that it was played during Tatars' invasion in XIIIth century by a guard, who played it to warn citizens against the attack. He was shot by a Tatar warrior while playing - since that day the melody breaks off just at the moment he died.

We also visited the Wawel cathedral, where John Paul II exercised his functions as the bishop of Krakow. From the top of the bell-tower, I enjoyed the panoramic view of the city. I shopped in Cloth Hall, and bought as many souvenirs as could fit in my small suitcase. I bought so much that I had to wear all of my clothes to supper and in the plane (look at the last picture, and you’ll notice that I am wearing my pajama under my turtleneck). According to Darran, by wearing these five shirts and my pajama pants under my corduroy, I gained fifteen pounds in two minutes!

Four our last meal, we ate at a typically Polish restaurant. According to a woman at the youth hostel, going to this restaurant is like going to Sunday supper at your Polish grandma’s place. I feasted on typical polish meals: potato pancakes and apple crepes. A true treat for the palate!

I left Poland exhausted, but blissful after a perfect week-end in an enchanting city. I can’t wait for my next trip…

Cette semaine, dans la série Ann with... ce sera Ann in the Land Down Under...

On arrangera ça demain.

    G'DAY Mate
    Ann

Now here's a shoe-in for the list of the year's best gaming-related clothing : Adidas has brought back its ZX 5 hundred running shoe, and, since it originally is from the '80s, the gaming electrified design and coloring is an easy choice ... Right? The kicks would possibly not be the coolest part of the deal, either ; they come packed with a combination bracelet/USB flashdrive containing ZX Runner, a software game based on ... The shoe itself.

GameCulture writes the game stars a personality named'DJ Zed' who, according to Adidas, has five mins to'run, moon-walk, climb walls, avoid some dodgy-looking thugs, collect power-ups, and pull off insane rooftop-to-rooftop stunts' to get on-stage before his set starts. It's fittingly retro -- see for yourself in the video we've included after the breakdance.

My virus protection was malfunctioning for a short time yesterday, and during that time I got a virus. I believe I've gotten rid of it, but I'm now experiencing another problem, which I suspect is some sort of malware that got onto my computer at the same time as the other virus. Whenever I try to do a search (mainly just searches pertaining to the problem at hand, although some normal searches as well), any link that comes up redirects me to a site to buy things or page of fake search engine results. I'm not sure what's going on and I can't find out because whatever has installed itself on my computer or in my browser is hijacking my search results. I'm sure there's an answer out there, but I can't find it because I can't do a proper search. Any tips you can give me for how to eliminate this problem would be greatly appreciated. I use Firefox and XP Professional. Also, I have been receiving a lot of notifications from Nortons that an IP address in Luxembourg (212.117.174.176) is trying to attack my computer. I'm not sure if this has something to do with it or not. Thanks.

The Groupon operates as an assurance deal employing ThePoint's platform: if a specified amount of gentlemen and women indication up for the supply, then the deal will get to be accessible to all if the predetermined least is not fulfilled, no one receives the deal that working day. This decreases opportunity for merchants, who can take care of the coupon codes as amount discount charges as appropriately as cash flow marketing assets. Groupon tends to make funds by striving to preserve roughly 50 percent the funds the consumer pays for the coupon.

For illustration, an $80 therapeutic massage could be attained by the buyer for $40 by implies of Groupon, and then Groupon and the retailer would split the $forty. That is, the retailer offers a therapeutic massage valued at $80 and will get about $twenty from Groupon for it (beneath a fifty%/fifty% break up). Or, if $240 well worth of residence portray firms is obtained by the customer for $fifty by means of Groupon, then the organization gets $twenty five and Groupon retains $25. The buyer receives the therapeutic massage, or the residence portray support, in these illustrations, from the retailer for which they initially paid $40 (or $fifty) to Groupon. There are distinct companies to which Groupon originally did not supply its companies, like capturing ranges and strip golf gear however, capturing ranges have been highlighted on Groupon.

As opposed to categorized selling, the merchant does not devote any upfront cost to participate: Groupon collects individual particulars from inclined buyers and then contacts only people buyers, largely by everyday e mail, who could possibly be intrigued in a specific answer or companies.

Groupon employs a massive number of copywriters who draft descriptions for the discounts showcased by e mail and on the world wide web website. Groupon's marketing text for the 'deals' has been noticed as a contributing facet to the popularity of the web site, showcasing a special merge of substantial basic truth-checking and witty humor.

Owing to Groupon's business turning out to be largely composed of female customers, the offers are usually concentrated on the properly becoming, overall health and attractiveness markets.

There are probably problems with the business item. For scenario in position, a successful offer could briefly swamp a small enterprise with as effectively a great deal of buyers, risking a chance that buyers will be dissatisfied, or that there will not be sufficient product to fulfill the demand from customers. Hole, a enormous clothes retailer, was all set to deal with 445,000 coupons in a countrywide supply (despite the fact that it knowledgeable server difficulties at 1 position), but a smaller firm could flip into abruptly flooded with customers. One particular certain espresso retailer in Portland, Oregon struggled with an enhance in buyers for a number of months, when it marketed near to a single,000 Groupons on the one specific day it was offered, in accordance to a single report. In reaction to related difficulties, Groupon officers position out that 'deal' subscriptions should to be capped in advance to a smart sum.
